Aso-ebi: how it works for hosts and guests
What aso-ebi is, how hosts choose and sell the fabric, how guests order and pay, sizes and tailoring timelines, and etiquette on the day.
What aso-ebi is
Aso-ebi ("family cloth" in Yoruba) is matching fabric worn by family and friends at a celebration - weddings, birthdays, burials, naming ceremonies and more. Wearing it shows you're part of the celebrant's circle, and the colours set the look of the day.
For hosts
Pick the fabric and colours early, set a price per person (fabric, plus gele or cap if included) and a deadline that leaves tailors enough time - usually 4–6 weeks before the event.
- Offer options if you can: fabric only, or fabric with a head tie or cap.
- Collect payment before you buy, and keep a list of who has paid and picked up.
- Say clearly where and when to collect.
For guests
Order and pay by the deadline, collect as soon as it's ready and get it to your tailor quickly - good tailors are booked solid before big weekends. Save your measurements so the next order is quicker.
On Zulra
Hosts can sell aso-ebi from the event, with variants, stock and a pick-up scan at collection. Guests pay in the app and get a receipt; part of the money reaches the host when the order is bought, and the rest after the guest confirms they've received it.
Etiquette
If you buy aso-ebi, wear it - that's the point. If you can't make the event, tell the host early. And follow the colour brief for the day, including gele and accessories if the host asked for them.
