Spraying money at celebrations: etiquette, and doing it from your phone
How spraying works at Nigerian weddings and parties, the etiquette to follow, and how to spray digitally so the money reaches the celebrant safely.
What spraying is
Spraying is showering celebrants with notes while they dance - a joyful way of showing love and wishing them prosperity. It happens at weddings, birthdays, naming ceremonies and other owambe.
Etiquette
- Spray when the MC or the music invites it, usually during the couple's or celebrant's dance.
- Place notes on the forehead or let them fall gently - don't throw them in faces.
- Never step on or crumple the notes, and let the people collecting do their work.
- Spraying is a gift: give what you're comfortable with, there's no fixed amount.
Spraying from your phone
Cash is hard to carry and harder to count. On Zulra you can buy a stack of digital spray notes for the event and throw them one by one in the event's Live chat - everyone in Live sees them rain with your name.
The money goes straight to the celebrant like a gift, so it doesn't get lost on the dance floor. The notes are Zulra artwork, not real naira, and the whole stack is the celebrant's once you've paid.
