Owambe planning checklist: from aso-ebi to the after-party
A practical checklist for planning a Nigerian party - guest list, aso-ebi, vendors, budget, run of show, spraying and thank-yous - with timelines.
3–6 months before
Big celebrations need early decisions, especially on venue and fabric.
- Set the date, the budget and a rough guest count.
- Book the venue, the caterer and the DJ or band first - they sell out.
- Choose your aso-ebi colours and fabric, and agree a price per person.
1–2 months before
- Send invitations with a clear RSVP date. Named invites ("Dear Tunde · Admits 2 · Table 4") cut down on gate-crashing and help with seating.
- Open aso-ebi orders and collect payment before you buy the fabric.
- Confirm the MC, photographer, decorator, cake and small chops, in writing, with deposits.
- Plan the seating, especially for family and VIP tables.
The final two weeks
- Write the run of show: arrival, opening prayer, introductions, food, dances, cake, speeches, spraying, closing.
- Share it with the MC and vendors so everyone moves together.
- Chase outstanding aso-ebi pick-ups and vendor balances.
- Brief whoever is at the gate: guest list, tables and how to check people in.
On the day
Give one trusted person the run of show and the vendor contacts so you can enjoy your own party. Keep a Live chat or group open for guests: photos, a few announcements, and spraying for guests who are far away.
Afterwards
Settle vendor balances, share the photo album, and thank the people who sent gifts - a short personal message goes a long way.
